In the early hours of 2nd August, a dozen of us made our way to Burns Bay Reserve to complete one of the most beautiful and peaceful rows of the year to date - a 16km row on the Lane Cove River, taking us deep into Lane Cove National Park.
After a spell of bad weather, we were delighted to be greeted by bright blue skies and calm waters, as we slowly snaked our way up the river and back, marvelling at the native birds, mangroves and leafy riverbanks. The river was ours for a couple of hours except for the occasional local rower or kayaker, providing us with a truly restorative experience from start to finish. Our little adventure also turned out to be a great opportunity for both social and competition members to get together as we mingled on the water and back at our boat shed, where hot drinks and home-made muffins awaited us, courtesy of our Social Committee. We all went back home inspired and reinvigorated, already thinking about where rowing might take us next. (CF) |
Octuple opportunity - 27 October 2019 |
Mike Perry invited five of our members to join him and two others to crew an "Octuple" rowing out of the Riverview shed. Andrew, Marcela, Rowena, Richard and Steve took up positions in an eight with two sculling oars each and proceeded to attempt a rowing speed record for our club members.... can we reach 6m per sec?
The variable wind conditions prevented the boat from attaining that speed, however, a healthy 5.14 was recorded after a blistering start. The unusually rigged boat attracted much attention from passing craft including a quizzical look across the river from our head coach who, we believe, did not recognise his club members - them being in a strange boat so far from home!
